Types of Braces
Metal orthodontic braces
Metal orthodontic braces are made from stainless steel and have been used for many years. While they are relatively inexpensive they are the most cost effective and are still considered the cheapest of all the fixed appliance options.
Clear ceramic orthodontic braces
These are much less visible and look more natural than metal braces, as they blend in with your teeth. White wires can be used to further improve the aesthetics.

Invisalign® appliances
These are an ever increasing and popular choice for people since they are practically invisible.
Invisalign® braces are computer designed and made of a clear plastic. A series of aligners are constructed and changed every two weeks. They are worn full time but removed for eating and brushing your teeth. Our orthodontists have been trained by Align Technologies, the company that manufactures Invisalign.
Lingual & Incognito orthodontic braces
Lingual orthodontic braces are attached on the inside of the teeth and are the preferred option for people who want their braces to be truly invisible.

Removable braces and mouthguards
These braces can be used for a number of simple treatments for instance where one or two teeth are tipped back inside the bite or expansion to correct crossbites. They often only take 6 months with compliance being the key to success.
Functional Braces
These are removable braces that are used to help correct your bite, usually in those patients who have protruding front teeth. Some dentists call this type of brace an “Orthopaedic brace”. They are only successful in patients who are growing and therefore not suitable for adults.

Retainers
Almost every patient who has had orthodontic treatment needs to wear retainers. Without them your teeth may move and become crooked again. They are also provided to help reduce age related change that can affect the position of your teeth. There are two main types of retainer; fixed (or bonded) retainers and removable retainers and the options will be fully discussed with you at your consultation. We are also happy to provide retainers for those patients who have had their treatment elsewhere.
